What Is a Colorway? Meaning in Fashion
A colorway is the specific combination of colors a product is made in. In fashion, one garment design is often sold in several colorways, for example the same hoodie in grey, sage green and navy, and each color-and-size combination usually has its own stock keeping unit (SKU).
Colorway Meaning in Fashion
A colorway covers every color on one garment: the main fabric, trims, stitching, print and details like buttons or zips. Change any of them, and it becomes a new colorway.
Brands usually name colorways in one of two ways:
- By color: "Navy / White", "Black", "Sage Green"
- By a creative name: "Desert Sand", "Midnight", "Ocean"

Colorway vs Color vs Color Palette
| Aspect | Colorway | Color | Color palette |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The full color combination of one specific garment | A single color | A group of colors used across a collection |
| Example | Navy body, white collar, red stitching | Navy | Navy, sand, olive and rust for a fall collection |
| Used for | Product variants and SKUs | Describing one part | Planning a season or brand look |
Examples of Colorways in Clothing
- T-shirt: black, white and heather grey
- Striped shirt: navy/white and green/white stripes
- Printed dress: the same floral print on a cream, black or blue base
- Hoodie: grey with white drawstrings, or sage green with matching drawstrings

Why Clothing Brands Offer Multiple Colorways
- More choice from one design: one pattern and fit, sold in several colors
- Seasonal updates: add new colorways each season without designing new products
- Test demand: see which colors sell before ordering more stock
- Wider appeal: different colors suit different customers and occasions

How Colorways Are Shown on Product Pages
- Color swatches: small color circles that switch the product images
- One full image set per colorway: front, back and detail for each color
- Same model, pose and lighting: so shoppers compare only the color
- Clear names: the colorway name shown next to the swatch
