Clothing needs more than a tidy outer outline. A useful cutout keeps the garment’s shape while separating fine edges from the scene. This is often called edge matting: deciding which pixels are fabric, background or a mixture of both. Results depend on your photo, so inspect delicate areas before publishing.
Lace has tiny openings; tulle lets the original backdrop show through the fabric itself. These areas need partial transparency, not just a hard outline. Start with an evenly lit photo against a contrasting, uncluttered background. After removal, check both the outer edge and the fabric openings. If the material becomes solid or disappears, use a clearer source or refine the mask in an image editor.
Small strands blend into nearby colours, especially against a busy scene. Use soft, even lighting and avoid an overexposed rim around the subject. Inspect the collar, shoulders and hair tips with the comparison slider. Check the downloaded cutout on both light and dark backgrounds to spot halos, missing strands or leftover background colour.
Open-knit sleeves, fringe and thin straps can resemble background gaps. Spread the garment so its shape is readable and keep hems inside the frame. Inspect spaces between stitches, handles and sleeves rather than checking only the silhouette. Background removal cannot recover fabric detail that was blurred, hidden or cut off in the original photo.
A transparent PNG is an editable starting point, not a guarantee that a listing meets every channel’s rules. This tool removes the background; it does not add a white canvas or resize to a marketplace’s required crop. Choose the final background and framing in your image editor before uploading.
