We tested ApparelAI using a structured, block-print cotton kurta set, a garment category where basic background removal is completely inadequate for professional e-commerce listings.

Uploading the flat-lay photo took only a few seconds. In Step 2 of the guided photoshoot wizard, we selected a South Asian female model (age 22 to 28, medium build) from the built-in library of over 60 diverse models. In Step 3, we selected a standing pose with a slight hip turn to showcase garment fit and silhouette. In Step 4, we applied the Ajio preset background, which generates clean, warm studio lighting. In Step 5, we confirmed the 1080x1440 portrait aspect ratio and reviewed the real-time composition canvas.

The final render arrived in just 9 seconds. The block-print pattern, sleeve borders, neckline stitching, and fabric drape were rendered realistically on the model body. The output looked like a high-budget commercial photoshoot, generated entirely from a simple flat-lay without booking models, hair, makeup, or studio space.

Photoroom started as a photo editor, and editing is still its core: background removal, retouching, AI backgrounds, shadows and resizing for any kind of product.

When we uploaded the flat-lay kurta from our test to Photoroom's background remover, it isolated the fabric edges with impressive precision and separated loose threads cleanly.

Photoroom's paid plans now also include AI Fashion Models, which show your product on a virtual model, and a Ghost Mannequin tool that turns flat-lay, hanger, mannequin or model photos into invisible-mannequin shots. Both draw on AI credits. On the $12.99 Pro plan, AI model images are 1K; 2K needs Max and 4K needs Ultra. Photoroom does not list a custom model builder, pose references or modes for sarees and suit sets. We have not yet rerun our kurta test with AI Fashion Models, so this part is based on Photoroom's pricing page and help center, checked October 9, 2026.

What this means: Photoroom costs far less per AI model image, especially at 1K. ApparelAI costs more per image but adds garment-specific control: reusable custom models, pose and scene references, ethnic wear modes and bulk catalog shoots.
